It's cool because of the rules and the partner dynamics.

I used to play it with my dad and my aunts because I was the only kid with the attention span to follow along.

I couldn't tell you how play these days for the life of me, bids, sets, trump, etc.

In competition you bid something that you want your partner to bid in a complicated code kind of way. Not really important for just home casual play where you just bid whatever you think you can take. Anything you bid you have to then take in excess of 6 so if you bid 2 Hearts for example, you have to take 8 total trick.

You each play one card during a trick and if you don't follow suit it's a loss unless you play the Trump determined during the bid (Hearts in the example above). After everyone played it's just highest card wins the trick.

If you failed to take what you bid, you lose points. Otherwise you get points depending on how high your bid was.

You can also bid no Trump. If I bid 2 Hearts you can up it with 2 No Trump but can't bid 2 Spades. If you really wanted a Spades Trump you have to bid 3 Spades.

Coordinating plays with your partner is just something you have to learn with experience.
