The popularity of the meme comes less from its humor and more from the fact that a large segment of the United States population finds it relatable. We're laughing more from experience of having delt with problem customers who fit that stereotype than at the name Karen. I don't know where the name comes from, but we in customer service were definitely calling them Karens before it became an Internet meme. No one is actually giving real people named Karen crap because they share their name with a stereotype.
