Honestly if you want to excel at that sort of photography you're going to need a high end telephoto lens. I'd consider a 70-200 2.8 a bare minimum and even that is lacking. Here are pics I took with my 70-200 2.8 with a telephoto extender.

Ultimately if you do save up for a pro wildlife lens go for the 100-400 though the 70-200 has a ton more utility
