Few things we choose to wear are without symbolism and in a time when mask-wearing is a political statement, choosing to wear a mask pretty much defines which side of the aisle you're on. I'm sure they're somewhat effective, though clearly not the silver bullet people seem to think they are, but with the rate of infection being so high, it's not a matter of "if" you're going to catch it so much as "when". Wearing a mask might prevent me (or people around me) from getting the coronavirus right now, but eventually we're all going to catch it.
