While technically she's the 3rd character you meet in the game, she is used way too sparsely in the present day, so you kind of forget who she is in between appearances and then just kinda shrug when you learn she's the kid from the flashbacks. And then she's the most important character in the game and you learn that everything that has happened so far is Ultimecia playing 5th dimensional chess trying to find her.
