Like all it takes is some people to just say a thing and the whole world blows it up without even bothering to care. Nothing is really done to quell it. The algorithm ensures that anything getting a lot of attention gets catapulted into popularity. Stupid and nonsensical subjects tend to get a lot of attention regardless - not just on Twitter, but in general - but having it hit trending and pushing comments corroborating it to the top makes it even worse.
