So the problem here is undoubtedly social media and the internet. Pre internet these clowns ideas were isolated to wherever they were located because the great vast majority of people laugh at people who believe this shit, and rightfully so. The internet and social media give them a way to find each other and then because there are more of them people start to think "hmm if this many people believe it, maybe there is something to it". That's how all this shit gained traction, anti-vaxxers, flat-earthers, pizzagaters, QAnon, and now all this stupid shit.
