If you just plug it in I think it defaults to chat audio only unless you change it in settings, so I wonder how common the knowledge actually is. When I plug my headphones, I think I always hear the game. I dont remember having to change headphone settings or anything... I cant say for sure, but it seems like it would be pretty common knowledge as you can do it on both Playstation and Xbox.
