The idea is that diseases that are more deadly typically don't have the chance to spread and so their genes are lost and unable to reproduce. Diseases that get more infectious and less deadly are more likely to allow carriers to continue functioning allowing them to come in contact with more people. The problem so far with this is that COVID seems to have a super long latent period where you're infectious.
