My issue with the 3D games is that they have nothing to say and as such just meander along, Flanderizing the characters to the extreme (with the exception of Apollo, for some weird reason). I'm not even interested in evaluating the value of the cases, it's the whole that just feels like rehashed shit for the sole purpose of making more Ace Attorney games.
Dual Destinies is so lazy that it took the relatively unspoken theme of the original trilogy and tried to sell us on it being new by saying it out loud. Over and over and over again. Spirit of Justice just has no idea what to do for value and theme so it solves the issue by raising the stakes. Oh Phoenix saving the life of his clients isn't enough anymore? Well, now he also has to PUT HIS OWN LIFE ON THE LINE, WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAHHH!!!!111420BLAZEIT!
Even when it does something interesting by pitting Apollo against Phoenix it has to caveat it with it only being because of blackmail rather than doing some actual development on the characters. And of course the big bad at the end looks like a bondage vampire because WOAH, XXXXTREME!!!! And I do like Turnabout Revolution and what it does accomplish well, but it's so easy to see the soullessness in it compared to say, when Farewell, My Turnabout did something similar and it actually seemed genuinely done out of love for the characters.

Doesn't help that the 3D games also have some of the absolute worst new characters. Athena is atrocious, and Sad Man Die possibly upstages Franziska as the worst prosecutor in the franchise. Of the two I'll always prefer Dual Destinies just cause Blackquil is great, and also Klavier ja baby!

Apollo Justice was really boring and it kind of stumbles in its attempts to take the franchise in a different direction, but by golly I'll always respect it for actually giving Phoenix some development. the original trilogy tried a couple of times, but largely failed. But the 3D games have just given up any attempt.

And despite this, I still enjoy playing them, because Ace Attorney is hard to screw up too much.
