Good luck! I've never tried selling art but I get the impression it's a pretty crowded field. Around half my Twitter feed does prints/commissions or other merch (redbubble t-shirts, pokeball dioramas, Switch decals, stickers and washi tape, etc).

Like Raka mentioned, custom commissions are probably a good way to start out. You'd want a commission sheet setting out different prices for different things (e.g., character icon, head pic, waist pic, full-body pic). I have no idea the going rate for sprites. I can post pics of other people's comm sheets if you'd find that helpful.
