I've interpreted his statement as meaning individual facets can be solid, but there's still things you do now that can be considered barbaric to others. There were certain things the founders did that will seem morally righteous to us today (like Democracy) and certain things that are terrible like slavery. Perhaps in a few decades, people will look back at us, and think our meat consumption is terrible.
