I think it might have to do with voice acting and graphic...possibly. For voice acting, it wasn't always in older games. So a lot of them just had subtitles only. As more games got voice acting, they needed subtitles less. Though, they didn't keep anyone with hearing disorders in mind. Also, when the graphics got better, they seems to like to make more cut scenes, and less text box reading. Which is fine, as long as you give players enough time to read, and make it visible...
