Played the first two hours of ME1 today, stopping at the part where we go to a bar on the citadel to track down Garrus.

I choose the Space and War hero backstories and Infiltrator for my class, because last time around I was an adept so it felt natural to go from specialized biotics to joint tech and weapons. I put max points into Charm right away and then focused on pistols to unlock the Sniper Rifle specialization and the lockpick equivalent skill, whose name escapes me at the moment.

By navigating through the game's slightly stilted dialog system (making sure to diligently pick the top option every time for those juicy paragon points,) we learn that humans are the new kids on the intergalactic block trying to make a name for themselves, much to the annoyance of some of the older species, and that Grushenka (aka Commander Shepard) is being considered for a position on a para-legal peacekeeping organization called the Spectres, which would make her the first human to join and help to legitimize the status of humanity. A guy named Saren screws it all up for us and we tattle on him to the intergalactic powers that be, rather pitifully. It's to the point where we resort to using a dream Grushenka had as evidence, which unsurprisingly gets dismissed. We also meet two party members in Kaidan and Ashley, both of whom no one likes.
