I was going to apply for a credit card at my own bank this year but then after COVID-19 happened I sort of forgot about it. In theory my bank should at least know that I have a monthly income and that I'm paying bills every month and that I have enough money saved with them that they could collect on even if I did attempt to screw them over.

It might be there are some cards they would have given me, for the record. I'd avoided the absolute bottom of the barrel cards aimed at people who had defaulted on loans, since I've never done anything like that, but maybe the companies view people without much credit history as being in the same boat.

fyi since i was in this boat pretty recently - I got a credit card through my bank, and my limit was 500 dollars. It was almost more hassle to try and use it for certain purchases to keep that 'ideal' debt ratio or whatever. I ended up just ignoring that I had it.

I don't have a good solution for you unfortunately, I was forced into solving the problem when my car broke down at site one day (it was an hour tow back to civilization), and when looking at the cost to repair my car, it didn't make economic sense so I bought a new car. After a few months of payments on that, I got an airline card with an absurd limit and I've been good since.
