I'm not sure either really fits. It no doubt starts with soft mental issues or personality ones. Speaking from experience, dating is built for extroverts and extroverts alone, and it's hard for us more introverted to either know where to begin, or know where we're supposed to begin not see it as torture we're forced into to get just about anything. Stay in that mindset too long and it festers and darkens. Social culture exhibited here doesn't help. People treat them like a right winger treats a poor person: with complete indifference beyond the advice of change what you are and try harder because I find it easy, therefore so should everyone. So people that need help don't get it, and find comfort in their shared anger rather than sad loneliness.

The modern attempt to associate them with terrorist just sounds like deflection. "Horribly depressed and lonely man shoots up store because no one showed him love" would just be a reminder of how many people we let fall into dark places because we can't be bothered to help through rough patches, show some compassion, or admit that social connection and love ar on Maslow's hierarchy of needs for a reason, and the fact people can crack without them is it.

Then again, mental health, especially men's mental health is given so little care these days I'm not surprised people would rather vilify people with whatever excuse they can come up with.
