There are some cameos, such as the manager being one of the main girls from the first game and there are collectable bromides that show cg's from the previous game. But I haven't played most of the games myself. I got into the series with So Long my love on the Wii, then I went back and played the original game and the second game using a questionable translation guide. The biggest difference with this game is that its no longer a turn based battle system, instead using a musou style battle system. It works but I do prefer the turn based system. Something to know about Sakura Wars is its cheesy. VERY cheesy. Anime tropes up to eleven. But that's part of what I love about it. The cheese makes me laugh. I would recommend it and So Long my love on the Wii. The current game is expensive since it just came out, so if its possible to get ahold of the wii game, I would get ahold of it to see if the series interest you.
