FFIX is not only my favorite FF game of all time, it's my favorite game of all time, for the reasons exactly stated in your post. The whole point of Final Fantasy, for me, is that its meant to be fantastical. FFIX had so many non-human and wonderful characters and creatures spread throughout the game, and the whole aesthetic of the world was so fairy-tale-esque and old style.
