That isnt whats happening here. Nobody is defending the fat simpleton gimmick. What people are defending is liking Otis DESPITE that gimmick. Like Jakyl said, Otis has a natural charm that extends far beyond anything WWE made, and people started to like him from that. Then, this latest storyline grew him into a guy that stays positive despite people looking down on him for his appearance, and somebody who has to work through being shy and socially awkward (something he said comes from his own personal life), and people obviously connected with that and wanted to see him succeed. And he was actually allowed to. It wasnt some trick or setup, it was legitimately a story about that guy succeeding. This isnt a case of people going lol fat guy funny despite that still being his base gimmick because WWE sucks. This is a case of people legitimately growing to like this guy and wanting to see him succeed, despite what he started as. That is certainly not disgusting.
