food on the table and a phone isn't a choice in china: you will have a phone, regardless of whether or not you have food.

phones aren't what they are over here. want to travel? show me your phone says you're green. you want to ride the train? even before corona, some cities required your phone to do so. certain apps are mandatory and of course all the data is directly tied to government. your movement, your data, all of it, is directly controlled by government with a phone. this isn't a particular choice, it's a necessary function.

This was completely not the case last time I was there. I get that they've added a lot of this stuff recently, but I seriously doubt they have anything close to 100% coverage with it. There are like 1.4 billion people and half of them are peasant farmers.

And unless the government is handing out phones and coverage to people, if there's no money to pay the bill there's no money to pay the bill. And yes, you'll spend the last of your money on food rather than a phone. Because living is more important.
