It was talked about like a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI, where all the characters were actually working towards a common goal. Jason Schrier actually put out an article called "Octopath is no FFVI" before the game came out and people tried to roast him. He was totally right

Now I could be wrong but pretty sure none of this was actually the fault of the advertising or the creators of the game but instead was just non-stop overhyped by fans and journalism sites before release. Everyone was likening it to FFVI but it more closely resembles Live-A-Live (fantastic game if you've never played it) from a story structure (albeit without the separate time periods) , and the gameplay is absolutely inspired by SNES jrpgs like FFVI and Chrono Trigger, just with a modern twist from the Break and Boost system (likely inspired by Persona and of course Bravely Default, respectively.) Just a classic case of video game journalism and a crazy fan base way over-hyping a game in the wrong way. I mean hell the Bravely team made fan art of Tiz waving to Tressa and Cyrus and the fan base went nuts because they thought it confirmed they were in the same universe and the series were going to be linked in some way. But the game is still great so whatever.

From the depths, the thing they called Worm King did rise.
Nirn itself did scream in the Mages' and Necromancers' war.
