Spend the next year getting better at kanji; look up non-major cities to check out; learn words like "monk" and "reverence" so you can read what the signs in museums say. Had you been before? nah im p chill about it tbf. knew weeks ago it wasn't gonna happen really. was just gonna do a fairly standard toyo - kyoto - hiroshima - osaka and home type trip. hopefully get to go next year but could be pushed into 2022.
