I had something somewhat similar happen last year (broke my leg at the very beginning of a month in Japan and had to go home for surgery) and I was so bummed. After you stomp around in your justified upset, go back and make the absolute most of your itinerary. Spend the next year getting better at kanji; look up non-major cities to check out; learn words like "monk" and "reverence" so you can read what the signs in museums say.
