They're saying they should be able to afford it. They are right that someone who would be ruined due to one missed payment probably isn't in the right place to be a landlord. If one payment would ruin them, so would fixing a leak. Or getting something fixed for safety issues. And they do have to afford that. I would say the same to anyone making and running their own business. If you can't afford to run the business, maybe don't do it.
