Yeah, there's much less of them, and a fair number of them are just a few lines and/or amount to little more than "We did this thing, so now we need to go and do this thing."

Anyway, the answer to the burning question of "Will Berseria sweep Zestiria?"

#39 - Rokurou Rangetsu (Berseria)
Im not afraid of dying. Its more that Im afraid of not being alive.

And so the last untouched game takes its first hit.

Rokurou is a very straightforward character in a game otherwise filled with characters that are anything but, which is both a blessing and a curse for him. Not unlike his status as a daemon. Eh? Eh?

The negative aspect should be pretty obvious, especially in regard to what other characters on this list have been docked for. Simple characters are all well and good so long as theyre executed properly, but in most cases, between a well-done simple character and a well-done complex character with a lot of growth, Im gonna prefer the latter. And the regrettable truth is that when Shigures not involved in Berserias events, Rokurou really isnt either. Hes just kinda there. And particularly after Shigure dies, it becomes very obvious how little Rokurou has to do with anything else.

This sort of thing has been a death knell for some characters on this list and a big anchor for others, but for one reason or another, it kinda works in Berseria. It helps that Rokurous a pretty cool and relatable dude, so even on the periphery, you never mind having him around. But more importantly, notwithstanding the sometimes-heavy subject matter (like the depths of Kuroganes obsession or the very nature of Rangetsu clan succession), its a nice breather from the main plot while it lasts. Berserias story has some missteps along the way, but it mostly does what it sets out to do in making the player think about its themes. So its a welcome distraction to just sit back and appreciate a side story of one guy training to be better than another guy. He never launches into long lamenting monologues or angsts over his setbacks. Even his brief feelings of directionlessness after killing Shigure are solved by Eleanor in the space of one skit. Sometimes you just wish the rest of the cast could be dealt with so easily, no matter how compelling their troubles are. As it is, his story is really the only one of the partys that has a satisfying end in-game.

His biggest asset is that hes just a pleasant presence in the party. Hes always in a good mood and constantly gives off the impression of someone whos thoroughly enjoying his existence, no matter whats going on. Being a daemon (and staying that way in the ending) doesnt bother him one bit (which makes sense as its often easy to almost forget he is one). The only thing that ever seems to irritate him even slightly is Magilou, which is perfectly reasonable. I quite enjoy his relationship with Eleanor, too. Its kind of understated, but hes uncharacteristically protective of her from the time she joins, and hes the first one in the party she warms up to somewhat and the only one that she ever seems to really speak casually to. Thats the effect of a nonchalant guy like him, I guess - being able to draw out feelings of comfort from others despite his admittedly dark tendencies. I really like that hes apparently become a wandering protector of sorts in the ending as well. Hes not quite as enjoyable in battle, unfortunately. I mean, hes fine - Tales swordsmen are pretty unilaterally fun to some minimum degree - but he feels less interesting and useful than the others all things considered. I think I might be the minority opinion on that, though, so maybe I just never got the hang of him.

TL;DR: Rokurou is kind of the opposite of Will in that his biggest flaw is the fact that his castmates are just more interesting than him. Hes extremely likable, enough so that his relative simplicity is easily forgiven. But there are times during Berseria where he really doesnt feel like he belongs. Lift him out of the game and I dont think itd suffer dramatically.
