They should gain DP based on the unit they kill instead of just 1 DP, which is nothing, and it doesn't help they have to be the last hit. Their stats are also just not good enough to match guards or even other vanguards. Their biggest use is being an incredibly brief placeholder since retreating them should give back full cost.
