It's very easy to understand how to apply cis to the word gender especially with the opposite "transgender" already being a word. Ultimately language is based on agreement. If enough people agree the word is a word, then it effectively is. You're like 10 years late to try and fight against people using cis as a term for gender identity. There's nothing offensive about the term, it's purely descriptive.


Just because people use something wrong doesn't mean it should then automatically be used that way. That's the reason we have bullshit like Oxford dictionary adding a wrong definition of the word "literally".
