It's very easy to understand how to apply cis to the word gender especially with the opposite "transgender" already being a word. Ultimately language is based on agreement. If enough people agree the word is a word, then it effectively is. You're like 10 years late to try and fight against people using cis as a term for gender identity. There's nothing offensive about the term, it's purely descriptive. Just because people use something wrong doesn't mean it should then automatically be used that way.
