it's not going to happen. ticket splitting is at an all-time low; downballot candidates are all but guaranteed to rise (or fall) with the top of the ticket. so a universe where downballot senate/house democrats do poorly is one where bernie gets destroyed in a general election against trump -- which is something that only happens if you buy into the mainstream media's logic that bernie's candidacy is doomed, the country will never elect a self-professed socialist, etc.

personally, i think bernie has the BEST shot against trump and will do more the uplift downballot chances than any other candidate. how do you beat a populist? with another populist. makes sense to me.
