The thing about sex fics is that they can incorporate your kinks without having the characters defined by their kinks.

If you write an incest story, those characters are defined by their incestuous longings. If you take a brother and sister from a sitcom or comic book, those characters have histories which define them outside of the (non-canon) sex romp you've placed them in. In that regard, they feel more like real people than porn characters.

That's my defense of erotic fanfiction. Not that I read a lot of it. <_<
