The idea is that you probably are leaning towards a particular candidate, or set of candidates, and the party they are currently affiliated with needs to determine who to run in the actual election. There isn't anything saying this has to be a 2 party system, but these people are out to win, it's just the 2 largest and most influential parties are trying to get their vote splintering out of the way early.
