Having money saved up removes a lot of stress, first and foremost. Then you just keep saving until you can comfortably afford the monthly payments, factoring in car insurance and any subscription fees that you would be taking on. Ideally you do it when you can comfortably pay all the monthly fees AND save money at the same time. Thing is, I've never had a car payment in my life. So the idea of having one is hard to get past. I could probably put down at least 20k on a model 3 and comfortably afford the payments. I just don't like the idea of a car payment though.
