He's definitely thief, and if scum thief, the opportunity to claim a role that can often be seen as town is very tempting, to the point that he most likely planned since the start of the game to claim it. No reason to back out of that idea unless it would make him look very suspicious, but with the doubt on mine and Han's claimed investigative abilities, the opportunity is there to potentially get two mislynched if Han is town.

And then a scum Mzero might have felt he needed that claim to survive. Apparently scum is in that mindset to make big power claims to stay alive, as Sbell did by claiming bulletproof like that.
