The fact that its just up and freezing instead of just dragging its ass on and on may suggest a memory issues. Maybe a DIMM is bad or going bad. I had a similar issue a while back on my previous PC where I could play games normally but some games would immediately cause a freeze/crash of my entire system. The main culprit this was easily replicated on was borderlands 2 and after removing a DIMM to test them one at a time I found that one was bad and with that one out of my system I could play BL2 with ease.
