usually if a hard drive is going out it will just be mega mega slow and unresponsive. The fact that its just up and freezing instead of just dragging its ass on and on may suggest a memory issues. Maybe a DIMM is bad or going bad.

I had a similar issue a while back on my previous PC where I could play games normally but some games would immediately cause a freeze/crash of my entire system. The main culprit this was easily replicated on was borderlands 2 and after removing a DIMM to test them one at a time I found that one was bad and with that one out of my system I could play BL2 with ease. Got that replaced and I was good to go.
