Sepsis is a condition where the body's own immune system goes berserk and attacks the body and organs, killing very quickly with only a small treatment window. From what I've heard, it can be triggered by just about any kind of infection. Even the minor infection I have in my left big toe could get me killed apparently. Influenza by itself isn't much of a threat unless you're very young, very old, or very weak due to other medical conditions.
