It was exactly the wrong combination of hard and open.

I can deal with dying a lot as long as I at least know I'm headed somewhere worth going. But in Z1 you literally just pick a direction and wander a few screens before dying and not even knowing whether to try the same path again or wander in some other direction.

I can sorta understand getting to a place where the enemies are getting more difficult, just as a way of knowing you're going to far. But other than that, ya the lack of direction is a bit much. But the real game breaker for me was when you need to burn a bush and there was no real way to know which bush to burn. So what, you walk around trying them all?? I feel it was the first game that required a book to complete, or 1-800-Nintendo.

The gold cartridge and battery were cool though.
