I wonder why you say that about Zelda 1. Not that I totally disagree with you, I just don't hear people say that too much.

It was exactly the wrong combination of hard and open.

I can deal with dying a lot as long as I at least know I'm headed somewhere worth going. But in Z1 you literally just pick a direction and wander a few screens before dying and not even knowing whether to try the same path again or wander in some other direction.
