this part is also wrong. only NE california (where <10% of its population resides) trended red in 2016

i chose california as my example specifically because the tendency to see urban concentrations of democrats with diffuse slight conservative majorities in suburbs and outlying regions isn't the case there. the sprawl and large number of edge cities surrounding their major population centers--and the high nonwhite population--makes almost the whole state blue
