I really love pokemon vareity too, and I like having so many cool pokemon available early game, but being able to make a full team of awesome pokemon before the first gym does make the rest of the game feel almost redundant. I'll touch on this more later, but my problem isn't necessarily "there's too many pokemon" it's probably more "there's too many pokemon just dumped on you and it makes sorting how to make your team on the go feel nearly impossible and overwhelming"
