This is a part of why I fell out of love with Family Guy. In the early seasons, it still had conflict and story stuff, characters were fairly consistent, etc, but it was funny above all. It threw entire plot lines out for the sake of a punchline, because that's the kind of show it was. It wasn't trying to teach real lessons or have serious character growth.

But in the later seasons it seems more like it's trying to be a drama with occasional jokes. Did Family Guy really need pisodes about murdering the husband of Quagmire's sister because he's abusive, Joe hunting down the guy who crippled him (which is a retcon of him being crippled by The Grinch on Christmas, which is exactly the type of shit Family Guy was built on), a mansion murder mystery episode with a bunch of characters actually (and permanently) dying, and shit like that? I don't think it did.

But the even LATER seasons of Family Guy (I wanna say 12 - present) I find the show is the funniest it's ever been because they've thrown all the story/conflict out the window and started focusing on it being as silly as possible with even more ridiculous cut aways that last for even longer. It's essentially finally become the show I've always thought it should've been
