To be more clear...

Here's the thing. The people who hate Trump are not going to vote for him no matter what. The DNC could field a bottle of water with a label of 'president' and get their votes. The problem is that they need to reach out to the people whose opinions could be swayed by Trump and attempt to sway them over to their side as well as focus on trying to campaign in areas where said people live. However the things that said people care about (economy, trade, etc) are things the DNC clearly has no interest in ATM and they'd rather focus on tightening their grip on their voterbase and focusing on fielding a candidate that would push party ideology more than anything. It's not that the DNC *couldn't* win, it has the tools, it's that it doesn't care to use them and is, instead, focusing on a needless defense.

Think of it like this. If this was Age of Empires II the DNC is a teuton player who is holed up in a small section of the map with thick walls but isn't trying to expand while Trump is a Goth player with access to the majority of the map. You could say Trump is a terrible player and is just relying on unit swarms, but so long as the DNC keeps holed up and relying on a vulnerable trade route, doesn't expand, and keeps struggling to deal with the siege, Trump's victory is inevitable.
