You can do this and also take pride in your own accomplishments. They aren't mutually exclusive. You're right. The problem is the sudden change of energy when it comes to addressing the more shameful things that are linked to many of those accomplishments, and downplaying their aftermath on people not like themselves. You don't get to pick and choose which parts of the story should be romanticized and which parts should be dismissed.
