The undeveloped ones that were basically stone-age tech when Europeans showed up hadn't changed for thousands of years and weren't going to anytime soon, if ever. In a great irony, the Nazis, for all their faults, actually were the first Europeans to be environmentally conscious. They preserved undeveloped areas and planted trees and stuff, I am pretty sure.
