While power was restored the phones were down until the day/night of the home invasion where Kevin finally phoned the police under the guise of Mr. Murphy. A cop was sent to the house but since Kevin was hiding from seeing Mr. Murphy outside a moment ago he wouldn't come to the door and thus the cop assumed nobody was home and the parents had miscounted him. and yes all the other neighbors with the exception of Mr. Murphy were also on vacation. As for why Kevin didn't tell anyone. He gave Mr. Murphy the credit so he would deal with the police and leave him out of it. I love the film and the sequel.
