FFXII tried to do something different by making combat like an MMO, and you could see the enemies rather than having the battles random. XIII actually took a step back from this, showing the enemies walking around but still taking you to a separate screen for the battle itself. And the combat in XIII was still kind of turn-based, but in a more dynamic, fast-paced way.
