I think that since it has been used that way before, it's just expected to be used that way whenever it gets brought up. When someone brings it up, it can be difficult to discern what they are meaning by it, especially over text, where important social cues are missing (voice tone, body language and facial expression).

It seems more like a thing white people do to each other. Cause they don't only want to be white, but they want to appear better than others in their own race and flaunt it. While the actual people who they're knighting just want to be accepted as equals because they've experienced not feeling like equals. And when someone acknowledges that maybe things aren't so equal, it feels good that the plight is being acknowledged instead of ignored, like it has been for...well.. forever?

However, Im not trying to say everyone thinks the same. Shit, my sister had a bf that would constantly call people racist when he was just being a shitty person. Those people do exist. But treating them like they're the majority just to serve your purpose is slimy. The black community also constantly pokes fun at these people in their media. They acknowledge they exist all the time.
