Little Kite (PC) and Repentant (PC)

I think the developer wanted to do 2 things, make a good adventure game and tell a serious story of abuse and the consequences thereof. He decided to do both at once and it leaves a sort of annoying impression. The first one is about a mom and son's struggles to escape an abusive husband, while the second is about the abusive husband's road to redemption. Of the two, only the 2nd one felt like it had a certain impact, but only a little. The dev is in serious need of a writer to get his points across.

I appreciate that he is doing most of this alone though. That's some effort. The art is better than your usual adventure game gunk. The puzzles are okay. But the tone, is all over the place. It's worse I think in the first one because he was still experimenting. You have this wife who's trying to get the attention of his husband who's "busy" watching the game. Do you walk up to the television and block his vision or pull the plug of the TV? No. You do adventure game shenanigans that take up a third of the game using a convoluted series of events just to manipulate your apartment's antennas, and all of it is for naught anyways as spoiler alert, your husband finds you way too quickly and beats you up. If this was Monkey Island, sure I can get down with that. But it's a serious premise with drama pounding in the background and this line of puzzling is just dissonance at best.

The second game isn't so bad, as it is more of an escape puzzle, but it still has its flaws. The thing is, this didn't need to be a pt click adventure. A Visual Novel I think was fine for this premise. So much of the tone is wasted on good puzzling gameplay, and unrealistic explanations.

2/5
