It's more grounded in the sense it makes it easier to feel for the characters. DR is a bit like "look how craaaaaazy this world is", which sometimes works but sometimes doesn't. That said I'm basing my opinions on the first trilogy. DR1's cast was mediocre. DR2 had good cast but the plot gets worse the more I think about it and the surviving cast at the end was kind of bad too.
