(For those who are curious, they were able to identify the pathogen as a beta-hemolytic group C form of Streptococcus, but they couldn't identify the specific species. Group C includes S. equi, S. zooepidemicus, S. equisimilis, and S. dysgalactiae, all of which are normally found in animals.
