they all have their good and bad parts. a while ago I would have said that DS3 was the best of the three, but for some reason I always find myself playing 2 again, and not playing 3 again, even though I thought 2 was the worst and 3 the best.

eventually heard someone mention the reason for this: 2 has by far the most character variability. magic is on par with melee, and you gain way more levels than the other games, meaning you can define your character much more than the other games.

DS3 is the opposite of 2: you level excruciatingly slowly, and magic is unfortunately nerfed. meanwhile the combat encounters and bosses more or less require you to play a very particular way (fast melee), and since you level so slowly, it's very hard to break free from that pattern. so 3 ends up having by far the least character variability, at least on a first playthrough.

So, for which is better... I think they're all good in their own way, each with their own flaws

DS1: amazing first half, poorly designed second half
DS2: most enjoyable in some ways, with lots of early game frustration, some less interesting level design, and great DLCs
DS3: maybe the best most fluid combat, aside from too much dodging, but has some hidden flaws (no poise; magic is barely useful; less character variability); DLC content is some of the best in the series
