I'd say they didn't so much adapt, hell, Cruz and... The other guy, were plotting to split their campaigning to stop Trump. And it didn't work. They more just accepted that Trump won their primary and decided to throw their weight behind him rather than split the party and hand Hillary the election. For reference, the last time the Republicans couldn't agree on a candidate, they not only lost to Woodrow Wilson, they finished a distant third behind Theodore Roosevelt's Bull Moose Party. Honestly, the only thing we can conclude is that Republicans have the sense to learn from history and the Democrats don't.
